Coming together as parents

Coming together with other parents is a really important part of helping to stay mentally and physically fit and healthy as a mum or dad.

Many parents however, lack the opportunity to meet a a group in a calm, adult environment (i.e. not a children’s soft play party!). Those already involved in social, religious or community groups will be well aware of the opportunity to talk and share experiences with other parents. It can sometimes feel like there is nowhere to come together to talk.

There are some amazing groups related to mental health for parents but personally I have never felt exceptional enough to attend something specific to ‘mental health’. Perhaps that is related to the power of the words and a legacy of stigma. For me, we all experience mental health issues – anxiety and stress are a normal part of many people’s daily lives.

The Reality Club Community often discusses this topic:
What if..
I don’t feel comfortable attending groups to discuss my ‘mental health’?
I don’t want to have to go to a pub and drink alcohol to share my honest feelings?
I don’t want to meet in a busy coffee shop to chat?
I don’t enjoy running or see this as more of a competitive group activity than conversational?

Perhaps the best approach is to find a place where you can do something you enjoy as an adult with other adults and where you feel comfortable speaking openly with others who are in a similar situation.

For some it is running, others music.. there is no ‘one size fits all’.
